Lab-Grown Diamonds: The Future of Ethical Luxury

For centuries, diamonds have been a symbol of love, luxury, and timeless beauty. However, the traditional diamond industry is also known for ethical concerns, environmental damage, and inflated pricing. Enter lab-grown diamonds, the game-changing alternative that offers the same breathtaking brilliance without the downsides of mining. At Hardtwein, we believe in transparency, quality, and sustainability, which is why we exclusively use lab-grown diamonds (or moissanites) in all our jewelry.

What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds created in controlled environments using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond formation process. These diamonds possess the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined diamonds—meaning they sparkle just as brilliantly but come without the environmental and ethical concerns associated with traditional mining.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

Lab-grown diamonds are created using two primary methods:

1. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

The HPHT process mimics the natural diamond formation deep within the Earth. Carbon is exposed to extreme heat (around 1.500 °C) and immense pressure (105.000 kg/cm²), causing it to crystallize into a diamond.

2. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

The CVD method starts with a thin slice of diamond (often from an HPHT diamond). It is placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gases, which are heated to create plasma. The carbon atoms slowly bond to the seed, growing into a pure diamond over several weeks.

Both methods produce high-quality diamonds.

Ethical and Environmental Advantages of Lab Diamonds

Unlike mined diamonds, which often have questionable sourcing and environmental impact, lab-grown diamonds are a sustainable and conflict-free alternative. Traditional diamond mining causes land degradation, water pollution, and carbon emissions, while also being linked to unethical labor practices. Lab-grown diamonds offer a responsible choice without compromising on beauty or quality.

The 4Cs: Understanding Diamond Quality

At Hardtwein, we only select lab-grown diamonds that meet the highest quality standards based on the 4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight.

1. Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of internal and external flaws (inclusions and blemishes). We only select lab-grown diamonds graded VS1 or higher ensuring no inclusions are visible to the naked eye.

  • IF (Internally Flawless): No internal inclusions
  • VVS1 - VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Inclusions are nearly impossible to see even under magnification
  • VS1 - VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions barely visible under magnification
  • SI1 - SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions may be visible without magnification

2. Cut

Cut determines how well a diamond reflects light, influencing its brilliance. The quality of the cut is also influenced by factors such as polish and symmetry, which play an essential role in a diamond’s light reflections. Hardtwein exclusively offers diamonds with Excellent or Ideal Cut grades, ensuring maximum sparkle and fire.

  • Excellent: Maximum brilliance, perfect proportions
  • Very Good: Slightly less brilliant but still high quality
  • Good: Less precise cut, slightly less sparkle

3. Color

Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown). We select only D-I color grades, ensuring bright, colorless diamonds.

  • D-F (Colorless): Premium-grade diamonds with no visible tint
  • G-J (Near Colorless): Slight warmth, nearly undetectable

4. Carat Weight

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond (not the size). While larger diamonds are more valuable, Hardtwein offers a range of sizes at fair prices, allowing you to find the perfect balance between size and quality.

Fluorescence

Some diamonds emit a glow under UV light. Fluorescence is not a bad thing and comes down to personal preference. Since lab diamonds are grown in a controlled environment, they usually don’t show fluorescence.

The De Beers Monopoly & The Free Market Shift

For decades, the De Beers family controlled the diamond market, artificially inflating prices by restricting supply. Their famous marketing campaign—"A Diamond is Forever"—created the perception that diamonds are rare and must be purchased at high markups.

Lab-grown diamonds disrupt this outdated system. As part of a free market, lab diamonds are not subject to artificial price inflation. Instead, prices continue to decrease as technology advances. This means you can get a larger, higher-quality diamond for a fraction of the cost of a mined one.

GIA Certification & Diamond Standards

All of our lab-grown diamonds above 1ct come with certification from reputable gemological laboratories, such as the HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant - Diamond High Council) and the IGI (International Gemological Institute). These independent bodies assess diamonds based on the 4Cs, ensuring transparency and quality verification.
