Moissanite

A Brilliant Alternative to Diamonds

Moissanite is a stunning, lab-created gemstone that has gained popularity as an alternative to diamonds. Originally discovered in a meteor crater in Arizona by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Henri Moissan in 1893, this rare mineral was later synthesized for use in fine jewelry. Unlike diamonds, moissanite is composed of silicon carbide, giving it unique optical properties and exceptional brilliance. Due to its high rarity in nature, all moissanite on the market today is lab-created.

The History and Evolution of Moissanite

In the late 1990s, Charles & Colvard patented the process for creating moissanite gemstones, making them the sole producer for many years. However, since the patent expired in 2015, Chinese manufacturers have emerged as major players in moissanite production, offering some of the highest quality stones at competitive prices. Despite its affordability, moissanite remains relatively unknown, especially in Europe. At Hardtwein, we believe in the beauty and value of moissanite and are committed to making it more widely recognized as a premium but affordable alternative to diamonds.

Grading Moissanite: The 4Cs Apply—Partly

Moissanite is evaluated based on similar criteria as diamonds: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Size (Carat).

1. Clarity

Most moissanites are VVS (Very Very Slightly Included) or higher in clarity because, unlike lab-grown diamonds, their rough material generally does not have inclusions.

2. Cut

A well-cut moissanite maximizes its brilliance and fire. We ensure our moissanites have excellent cut, polish, and symmetry to achieve optimal sparkle.

3. Color

Moissanites are available in colorless (D-F), near-colorless (G-H), and slightly tinted (I-J) shades.

Besides that, moissanites are also available in a wide array of beautiful colors like yellow, green, grey and blue.

4. Size (Carat)

Unlike diamonds, moissanites are not typically sold in carats because they weigh less than diamonds of the same size. Instead, they are measured in millimeters (mm). For example, a 9 x 7 mm oval moissanite is equivalent in appearance to a 2-carat diamond. For a detailed comparison, you can check out Charles & Colvard’s moissanite size table.

How Moissanites Compares to Diamonds

Moissanite is not a fake diamond—it’s a gemstone in its own right with distinct properties. It exhibits more fire (rainbow-like flashes) than diamonds, has excellent durability, and is significantly more affordable. Diamonds on the other hand show more crispness and depth. With recent declining lab diamond prices, moissanite is now primarily appealing for larger stones (1ct and above) or jewelry with multiple stones, like our Elena Eternity Ring, where the cost savings are more noticeable.

Feature

Moissanite

Diamond

Refractivity

Double refractive (splits light in two: one beam of light enters and two beams of light exit)

Singly refractive (light passes through unchanged)

Sparkle

More rainbow-colored fire (high dispersion, like a disco ball)

More white light return (balanced brilliance)

Clarity & Depth

Can appear slightly “fuzzy” due to facet doubling

Crisp, well-defined facets with strong contrast

Overall Appearance

Intense, colorful sparkle with less depth

Classic, sharp brilliance with a mix of white and colored light

Durability

9,25 on Mohs scale (extremely durable)

10 on Mohs scale (hardest known material)

Ethical

Always lab-grown

Can be mined or lab-grown

Cost

Significantly lower than diamonds

Higher, varies by origin

Best For

Those who love vibrant, fiery sparkle

Those who prefer a traditional diamond-like flicker

Fake Moissanite Certification?

Chinese manufacturers often include GRA (Global Gemological Research Association) certificates with their moissanites. It’s important to note that GRA is not a real institution. Unlike diamonds, which have grading labs like GIA, IGI and HRD, moissanites have no officially recognized grading authority.

The certificates are not necessarily “fake,” nor do they mean that the stone is fake. They are typically issued by the moissanite manufacturers themselves and list the stone’s properties. However, since GRA is not a recognized institution and its certificates often contain spelling mistakes, fake addresses, and links to suspicious websites, we have chosen not to include them with purchases.

Instead, we test all our moissanites ourselves in-house to ensure authenticity and only work with the highest-quality manufacturers and cutters. Rest assured that the moissanite you receive from Hardtwein is of the best quality.

Moissanite Care & Maintenance

While moissanites are extremely durable, they require different care than diamonds. Be sure to check out our Moissanite Care Guide to keep your gemstone sparkling for a lifetime.

Moissanite vs. Diamond: Which One is Right for You?

Ultimately, choosing between moissanite and diamond is a matter of preference. Moissanite offers incredible brilliance and affordability, while diamonds offer more depth and crispness in their appearance. Whether you're drawn to the fire of moissanite or the traditional appeal of diamonds, Hardtwein is here to help you find the perfect gemstone.
